Lew Rockwell
John T. Flynn, like other members of the Old Right, was disgusted by the irony that what he saw, almost everyone else chose to ignore. In the fight against authoritarian regimes abroad, he noted, the United States had adopted those forms of government at home, complete with price controls, rationing, censorship, executive dictatorship, and even concentration camps for whole groups considered to be unreliable in their loyalties to the state.

After reviewing this long history, John T. Flynn proceeds to sum up with a list of eight points he considers to be the main marks of the fascist state.

As I present them, I will also offer comments on the modern American central state.

Point 1. The government is totalitarian because it acknowledges no restraint on its powers.

This is a very telling mark. It suggests that the US political system can be described as totalitarian. This is a shocking remark that most people would reject. But they can reject this characterization only so long as they happen not to be directly ensnared in the state’s web. If they become so, they will quickly discover that there are indeed no limits to what the state can do. This can happen boarding a flight, driving around in your hometown, or having your business run afoul of some government agency. In the end, you must obey or be caged like an animal or killed. In this way, no matter how much you may believe that you are free, all of us today are but one step away from Guantanamo.

As recently as the 1990s, I can recall that there were moments when Clinton seemed to suggest that there were some things that his administration could not do. Today I’m not so sure that I can recall any government official pleading the constraints of law or the constraints of reality to what can and cannot be done. No aspect of life is untouched by government intervention, and often it takes forms we do not readily see. All of healthcare is regulated, but so is every bit of our food, transportation, clothing, household products, and even private relationships.

Mussolini himself put his principle this way: “All within the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State.” He also said: “The keystone of the Fascist doctrine is its conception of the State, of its essence, its functions, and its aims. For Fascism the State is absolute, individuals and groups relative.”

I submit to you that this is the prevailing ideology in the United States today. This nation, conceived in liberty, has been kidnapped by the fascist state.

Point 2. Government is a de facto dictatorship based on the leadership principle.

I wouldn’t say that we truly have a dictatorship of one man in this country, but we do have a form of dictatorship of one sector of government over the entire country. The executive branch has spread so dramatically over the last century that it has become a joke to speak of checks and balances. What the kids learn in civics class has nothing to do with reality.

The executive state is the state as we know it, all flowing from the White House down. The role of the courts is to enforce the will of the executive. The role of the legislature is to ratify the policy of the executive.

Further, this executive is not really about the person who seems to be in charge. The president is only the veneer, and the elections are only the tribal rituals we undergo to confer some legitimacy on the institution. In reality, the nation-state lives and thrives outside any “democratic mandate.” Here we find the power to regulate all aspects of life and the wicked power to create the money necessary to fund this executive rule.

As for the leadership principle, there is no greater lie in American public life than the propaganda we hear every four years about how the new president/messiah is going to usher in the great dispensation of peace, equality, liberty, and global human happiness. The idea here is that the whole of society is really shaped and controlled by a single will — a point that requires a leap of faith so vast that you have to disregard everything you know about reality to believe it.

And yet people do. The hope for a messiah reached a fevered pitch with Obama’s election. The civic religion was in full-scale worship mode — of the greatest human who ever lived or ever shall live. It was a despicable display.

Another lie that the American people believe is that presidential elections bring about regime change. This is sheer nonsense. The Obama state is the Bush state; the Bush state was the Clinton state; the Clinton state was the Bush state; the Bush state was the Reagan state. We can trace this back and back in time and see overlapping appointments, bureaucrats, technicians, diplomats, Fed officials, financial elites, and so on. Rotation in office occurs not because of elections but because of mortality.

Point 3. Government administers a capitalist system with an immense bureaucracy.

The reality of bureaucratic administration has been with us at least since the New Deal, which was modeled on the planning bureaucracy that lived in World War I. The planned economy — whether in Mussolini’s time or ours — requires bureaucracy. Bureaucracy is the heart, lungs, and veins of the planning state. And yet to regulate an economy as thoroughly as this one is today is to kill prosperity with a billion tiny cuts.

This doesn’t necessarily mean economic contraction, at least not right away. But it definitely means killing off growth that would have otherwise occurred in a free market.

So where is our growth? Where is the peace dividend that was supposed to come after the end of the Cold War? Where are the fruits of the amazing gains in efficiency that technology has afforded? It has been eaten by the bureaucracy that manages our every move on this earth. The voracious and insatiable monster here is called the Federal Code that calls on thousands of agencies to exercise the police power to prevent us from living free lives.

It is as Bastiat said: the real cost of the state is the prosperity we do not see, the jobs that don’t exist, the technologies to which we do not have access, the businesses that do not come into existence, and the bright future that is stolen from us. The state has looted us just as surely as a robber who enters our home at night and steals all that we love.

Point 4. Producers are organized into cartels in the way of syndicalism.

Syndicalist is not usually how we think of our current economic structure. But remember that syndicalism means economic control by the producers. Capitalism is different. It places by virtue of market structures all control in the hands of the consumers. The only question for syndicalists, then, is which producers are going to enjoy political privilege. It might be the workers, but it can also be the largest corporations.

In the case of the United States, in the last three years, we’ve seen giant banks, pharmaceutical firms, insurers, car companies, Wall Street banks and brokerage houses, and quasi-private mortgage companies enjoying vast privileges at our expense. They have all joined with the state in living a parasitical existence at our expense.

This is also an expression of the syndicalist idea, and it has cost the US economy untold trillions and sustained an economic depression by preventing the postboom adjustment that markets would otherwise dictate. The government has tightened its syndicalist grip in the name of stimulus.

Joel’s Note: Stay tuned for Part II of Mr. Rockwell’s take on the “Eight Marks of Fascist Policy” in Monday’s edition of The Daily Reckoning.

In the meantime…

If, as Mr. Rockwell asserts, the US is much further down that road to fascism than most people think (or indeed, already there), it probably helps to at least have an idea of what’s going on. Earlier today, Agora Financial executive publisher, Addison Wiggin, released a presentation that most people won’t want to view. It contains certain truths they simply don’t want to hear. But ignoring these facts won’t make them go away…and it won’t help people properly prepare for their consequences. Take a look at what Addison has to say here.

The TITANIAN LAW PROJECT

THE TITANIAN LAW PROJECT
A SPECIAL MESSAGE TO LEGISLATORS, JUDGES, ATTORNEYS,
PARALEGALS, AND BOTH FORMAL AND INFORMAL STUDENTS OF THE LAW

When government by law was first invented, eight thousand years ago in Sumer, the basis of law (and hence government itself) was “might makes right”. The kings and tribal chieftains who could afford to field armies saw it was to their advantage to form a power-brokerage cartel to manage their shared monopoly of power over their neighbors. The mechanism that they invented to accomplish this feat, we know today as hierarchy. It is the central feature of almost all our institutions today, including those of Business, Organized Religion, and Government (BORG).

Today it is generally understood, at least in the developed western world, that the “might” of military and police forces does not, in fact, confer the “right”, upon those who wield such coercive power, to command the lives of those who lack these powers. Accordingly, most of the world’s governments give lip-service to the notion that they exist to serve the interests of those whom they govern.  And indeed, in an ethical human society, this concept would represent reality.

Unfortunately, for most of the people of the world, government that serves the interests of the public is just a myth, perpetuated by those who use the lie to facilitate their manipulation of those less resourceful than themselves. By believing the lie we permit our own enslavement.

In reality the nature of government has not changed since the days of Sumer.  It remains a power-brokerage cartel that truly serves only its own interests:

  • Maximization of its members’ profits,
  • Maximization of its powers of coercion, and
  • Stabilization of its monopoly role in the power-brokerage marketplace.

The rest of society, with few and insignificant exceptions, complies with the demands of government, even to the extent of mirroring one of its worst features, the use of hierarchy as a mechanism for power-brokerage, within the structures of virtually all our institutions, both public and private.

Thus it is that humanity today labors under the burden of a vast parasite, which, left unchecked, will do what all parasites do: it will destroy its host, even though its own survival depends upon the health of its host.  Today the parasite of government has the power to turn our entire planet into a radioactive cinder, unfit to sustain any kind of life as we know it.  As things stand now, it is likely to do this.

But maybe it’s not too late. Maybe, by using HoloMatic institutions comprised of ethical Octologues, we can pull ourselves back from the brink of disaster and transform human society into a sustainable thriving whole.

Whether you are a legislator, a judge (active or retired), an attorney (practicing or not), a paralegal, or merely a justice-minded law student, your participation in the development of Titania, your personal effort, your creativity could be crucial to the future of humanity itself.

To understand what is needed, let’s take a quick look at what is wrong with our current legal systems.  Such systems today, the world over, are prone to the following obvious flaws, foibles, or weaknesses:

  1. Many laws forbid ethical acts.
  2. Many laws require unethical acts.
  3. Many laws take money, property, financial opportunity, privacy, or freedom away from those to whom it belongs and bestow it upon those to whom it does not belong.
  4. Many laws, regardless of their merit, are passed by legislators to curry favor with voters or with the lobbyists who pay for their election campaigns.
  5. Many laws continue to be enforced long after it is obvious that they do not produce the behavioral results that they were intended to produce – or even when they produce the opposite effects.
  6. Many laws are passed and enforced in the name of “protecting the public” when, in fact, they primarily serve to give a group of influential people protection against the market encroachment of another, less influential, group of people. In this the public is the loser.
  7. Many judges openly forbid jurors from considering the merits or legitimacy of the laws being enforced in their courtrooms. This serves to bureaucratize the legal system by immunizing it against corrective feedback. In this case everyone is the loser.
  8. To be legitimate, by modern standards, a law must serve the best interests of the people – all the people – who are supposedly being protected by the law. When this principle is violated, the resulting law is not legitimate and cannot be ethically enforced.
  9. Enactment of a law is, by its nature, a delegation of authority from the legislators enacting the law to the legislative body that those individual legislators comprise. When a group of legislators enact a law that delegates authority that those legislators do not possess as individuals, the resulting law is not legitimate and cannot be ethically enforced.
  10. Mindful of the fact that governments are power-brokerage cartels whose true purposes are purely self-serving, it is clear that laws that support and/or enforce the true purposes of government are never ethical. The vast majority of laws in the world today fall into this category.

From the foregoing description of the “Foibles” of government-enacted law, and from what we have shown elsewhere in this website concerning the E+ Ethic and the “Comforting Lies”, we can draw the following logical conclusions, which comprise some of the principles of just law:

  1. Government, as we know it, is incapable of enacting and/or enforcing just (ethical) laws.
  2. Political systems, at best, determine who gets to participate in the power-brokerage cartels that we call “governments”; but nothing in any political process enables the people governed to alter the unethical nature of government. Majority Rule contributes to this fact.
  3. For a society to thrive it must have a legal system that is entirely independent of government.
  4. Such a legal system must be privately funded and privately operated by a group of people committed to the principles of just (ethical) law.
  5. Just laws must be enacted solely to serve the ends defined by the E+ Ethic or an alternative ethic that is the logical equivalent of the E+ Ethic, and must be further be constrained to embody the principle that ethical ends can only be achieved by means that are ethical ends in themselves.
  6. Any law, rule, regulation, or procedure sanctioned by the Bill of Ethics qualifies as an artifact or embodiment of just law.
  7. Any law, rule, regulation, or procedure not sanctioned by the Bill of Ethics is not an artifact or embodiment of just law.
  8. For a society to thrive, its unjust laws and the rules, regulations, and procedures that support and enforce them must be repealed.
  9. The exercise of (coercive) power over others is never ethical except  in the case of the defense of self or others against unethical acts – and then only when all available non-coercive means have failed – and even then limited to the application of the minimum amount of coercive force required to prevent further occurrence of the unethical act or to provide redress of the harm done by the unethical act or acts already perpetrated.

It is the intention of Titania to create and operate an alternative legal system to which the public can turn for the arbitration of conflicts, the redress of grievances, and the establishment and enforcement of just laws. To that end:

  1. The Titanian Legal System (TLS) will be built upon the definitions and principles provided by the Bill of Ethics.
  2. The TLS will be privately owned and operated, entirely independent of government, and will be funded entirely by voluntary payment of service fees and subscriptions by persons wishing to avail themselves of the services afforded by the TLS.
  3. Organizational elements of the TLS will be structured as HoloMats of Octologues according to the definitions provided by the Constitution of Titania.
  4. Over time, and as its means permit, the TLS will define and codify just law in the fields of contracts, business, torts, the environment, and criminal law.
  5. On the same basis, the TLS will offer services that may include, but not be limited to the following:

a.Mediation,
b. Arbitration,
c.Education,
d. Consultation,
e. Expert testimony,

f.  Judicial services,

  1. Defense of persons unjustly accused of criminal charges under government-enacted laws in government courts.
  2. The writing of legal briefs arguing for the repeal of unjust laws and the redress of grievances for persons against whom unjust laws have been enforced.
  3.  Development of a system of legal defenses against the enforcement of any and all laws providing for the practice of taxation by government at all levels.

If you understand the foregoing and are prepared to make a significant investment in bringing the TLS to reality, then you may be in a position to “play” in the Titanian “Legal Sandbox”.

Now let’s consider some of the other ways you can PARTICIPATE IN TITANIA.

Modern democracy: you have to be an idiot to believe in it.

Sovereign Man

Date: August 17, 2011
Reporting From: Zell am See, Austria
Did you know that the word ‘idiot’ is actually derived from the origins of democracy in ancient Greece? Thousands of years ago, a Greek citizen who demonstrated disinterest in politics was labeled ‘idiotes’; it literally meant ‘private person,’ which curiously enough was a term of derision at the time.Fast forward to the pitiful excuse we have for a democratic process in the world today, and the opposite is now true: you have to be a complete idiot to invest yourself in these politics.Saturday’s straw poll in Ames, Iowa is a perfect example.  A few thousand people voted for their preferred republican presidential candidate, and mainstream media outlets have been talking about it nonstop. There are a lot of things wrong with this system–First, why should anyone care what a few thousand people in a single town think? Do the whims of 17,000 people really have any bearing on a country of 310 million? In modern democracy, they do.Michelle Bachmann won the poll. Granted, she won by bribing her voters with a free Randy Travis concert, but such things don’t matter in modern democracy. In the eyes of the media, she is now the front-runner having garnered a whopping 28.6% of the 17,000 people who voted.

The same logic, however, does not apply to the guy who came in second… if you can even find his name anywhere in print. You see, there’s this lowly fellow from Texas by the name of Ron Paul who scored 4,671 votes, just 152 shy of Bachmann.

Yet while the media is heralding Bachmann’s victory as a major success for her campaign, there has hardly been an utterance of Ron Paul’s strong finish on Bachmann’s heels.

The third place finisher, former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, was so dismayed by his results that he withdrew from the race after securing only 13.7% of the votes.

It’s incredible that the fickle whims of tiny Iowa mob could be regarded as so influential that the first place finisher would be anointed, and the third place finisher withdraw in disgrace… and yet the exact same results are to be completely ignored when applied to the second place finisher.

Again, such is the nature of modern democracy… and I feel bad for people who live in the United States that have to put up with another 15-months of this crap.

On one side, President Obama is already flying around the country for his reelection campaign, reading teleprompted remarks that are devoid of any credible plan. Meanwhile, US taxpayers are footing the bill for much of his multimillion-dollar travel and entourage costs.

On the other side, the media is colluding to select front-runners and marginalizing the only guy who actually has a clue of how drastic the US economic situation is.

This system is a complete farce. The ancient Greeks would call you an idiot if you wouldn’t participate in their democracy and focused on your own affairs.  Today, you have to be an idiot to set aside your own priorities and put any faith in this system.

As long as this system is in place, the ‘leaders’ that emerge from it will be cut from the same cloth. They are concerned solely about their own status and  have little interest in the voting populace beyond providing whatever minimum benefits are necessary to buy your vote.

In their efforts to consolidate more power and take greater control, they’re hitting the accelerator as they drive the country off the cliff.  Putting any stock in this system is dangerous to your family and your livelihood.

I know we’ve all been brainwashed that the government exists to help us, but the truth is that you ultimately have only yourself to rely on. This is not something to fear, but to embrace, and thinking people ought to take steps immediately to increase their self-reliance in this Age of Turmoil.

James Turk: I’m James Turk. I’m a director of the GoldMoney Foundation. I’m here with one of the legends of Wall Street, Jim Sinclair. Jim, it’s really pleasure to speak with you.

Jim Sinclair: It’s my pleasure to be with you.

James: Thank you. I’d listened to your brilliant presentation here at the GATA conference in London. I’d like to talk to you about it a little bit. I want to focus in on this $1,764 number. How did you come to this $1,764 number on gold?

Jim: The angels that I’ve published, the numbers that I’ve suggested and to a large degree been successful with, actually come from a formula that Jesse Livermore used. And he actually used it for new issues, but it applies to gold. It was published in 1923 in The Wall Street Journal, and it’s called the square of the numbers.

James: OK. Now the significant thing in my mind is that when this $1,764 number is breached to the upside you were saying that gold could go exponential. Can you explain some of your thinking behind that?

Jim: Well, we’ve been through two phases in gold in my opinion. In other words the first phase was rather arithmetic. It had a nice angle of appreciation, but not a great angle. When we cross the $524.90, I suggested to people that possibly trading wasn’t the best idea. That real money is made by holding a position that’s right and holding it for the duration of that period of correctness.

James: Riding the trend.

Jim: Just riding that whole trend without the need for leverage.

James: Yeah, I agree with you.

Jim: Without the need for catching every interim top. $1,764 has the same implications as $524.90 had. It’s mathematical. But what it would indicate would be that the trend had changed now from arithmetic with certain periods of a geometric rise into a period of time where exponential rises are possible. $1,764 is the loss of confidence. $1,764 is the king has no clothes. $1,764 is the transparency of the depths of our problems and the duration of our problems.

James: Well, you hit the nail on the head not only explaining why gold is going up, but something to me that’s very important. You know, the sentiment indicators. For something to go exponential, there has to be a change in psychology of various participants around the world. So you’re implying that sentiment is going to change negatively for national currencies and positively toward gold in such a way that it will just keep running.

Jim: Lack of management. Something on its own. Situations developing without any plans on how to handle them, but rather just reacting to circumstances as they come.

James: Yeah.

Jim: The absolute embarrassment of the compromise that allowed the debt ceiling to rise in the US. Anyone who had any part in that arrangement should be embarrassed. It’s becoming clear to the world that we react to circumstances in North America, in the US, without any plan whatsoever for what they might be.

James: Yeah. Understand completely. So policy makers are, they don’t have the political will to do the right thing. They don’t have the political will to turn around and get back on the right road and stop this train wreck that looks like it’s going to happen?

Jim: This is a slow train wreck. It’s going to go on, in my opinion, right through 2015. This train wreck is circumstances creating decisions reactively. This train wreck is an out of control economic circumstance. This train wreck is exactly the same as if you and I spent everything we had, borrowed on our credit cards and lost our job on a national basis. Credit is gone wild and it’s coming home to roast.

James: But, you know, this is something different. You know, I’ve gone to countries like Argentina in 1991 to study the problems with the currency and hyperinflation. But, you know, we’re talking about the world’s reserve currency here.

Jim: Yes.

James: So what you’re suggesting is this is going to have a profound impact, not just in the United States, but everywhere?

Jim: For exactly that reason. The reserve currency, the currency upon which other central banks have taken comfort, that reserve currency is broke. That reserve currency has debt that can’t be controlled. That reserve currency is going to transmit its problems throughout the Western world.

James: You know, you probably remember from the 1970s when John Connally was President Nixon’s secretary and we were having one of the many crises, probably 1973, with regard to the dollar. And Connally said, “Well, the dollar is our currency but it’s your problem,” speaking to the rest of the world. Is that still the same attitude today?

Jim: That madness still continued, but I don’t think continues anymore.

James: Because?

Jim: I think that madness has been brought into the light of reality by the increase in the debt ceiling based on nothing whatsoever. On a very poor compromise. On doing nothing. On just making a piece of paper. Of just doing theatrics for TV.

James: Well, this is interesting because what you’re basically saying is the debt ceiling process, where they finally did increase it after all of this political posturing and whatnot. That was sort of a wakeup call? Not only in America, but also the rest of the world as to…

Jim: It was a total shock.

James: Yeah.

Jim: I don’t think any economic event in modern history has been as embarrassing as the so-called compromise, the so-called bill and the so-called lauding of that accomplishment. And the market the next day looking at it and defining it as totally fallacious.

James: Are you comfortable talking about the euro and what the implications of the dollar are going to be on the euro?

Jim: It’s not just simply the dollar on the euro or the euro on the dollar. That’s day to day trading. Our problem is not a problem of just the US dollar. It’s in the entire Western world.

James: Fiat currency?

Jim: Fiat currency of the entire Western world. What we lose others gain.

James: Yeah.

Jim: There was a time when we had it all and there was a time when we gave all of that back.

James: Yeah.

Jim: It’s not simply what is Greece going to do today or tomorrow. It might be what is New York state going to do today and tomorrow.

James: Or Illinois or California.

Jim: And media, media has focused on the euro and our rating agencies are totally euro-phobic. While if they were to turn the mirror around and look the other way, they’d see the exact same thing. The trading that will take place between the euro and the dollar are purely mirror images reflecting whatever the flavor of the day is. It’s an entire Western world currency problem that is endemic because of the dollar, which transmitted the problems of debt not simply from the US, but to the world.

And they all went nuts on the derivatives. And they’ve created this pseudo money going around the world. Which before the Bank of International Settlements changed their measure was quadrillion. Not trillion. And that specter is still in cyberspace, waiting for any opportunity to surface again.

James: Yeah. So they’ve all been bitten by the fiat currency disease and, you know, we can’t just talk about the dollar…

Jim: Greed.

James: We’ve really got to talk about everything.

Jim: Greed.

James: That’s human nature, right?

Jim: But human nature to the extreme. Who needs enemies when we have the financial leadership we have?

James: Yeah. Understand completely. So if gold goes exponential against the US dollar when it clears $1,764, by implication it’s going to go exponential against the British pound, the euro and pretty much everything else?

Jim: And every single currency to the differential of how that currency trades against others. But in all currencies.

James: Unless the central bank in that particular country wakes up and adopts sound money policies?

Jim: But how can you now? How can you adopt sound money policies when the adoption of those policies will open Pandora’s Box of this enormous amount of derivatives still floating around the world? Will open a Pandora’s Box of the lack of balance sheet integrity in the US banking system. When you’re allowed to value your asset at anything you think it’s worth, how can that be balance sheet integrity?

James: Yeah.

Jim: All of this, we’re coming to a point now where all of this is just waiting to explode from underneath the contraction that’s taking place around the world in the second dip, or the double dip that we’re having in this recession. Or maybe the beginning of a depression.

James: I see.

Jim: What comes out in the next few weeks from the central bank will be a great determinant of whether 1,764 is breached.

James: One thing you also said in your presentation is that one of the best ways right now is to own physical gold. And you continue to own it, because it’s still relatively good value?

Jim: The ultimate protection for yourself is to own and be your own central bank.

James: Yes.

Jim: And being your own central bank would be the first step of owning gold, rather than the reserve currency, dollars.

James: You’ve taken the words right out of my mouth. I couldn’t have said it better.

Jim: Well, that is ultimate.

James: Yeah, I agree. Any parting comments that you’d like to share with the viewers? This is going to be seen by thousands of people, you know, all around the world.

Jim: Well, we’re on the, we are right on the cusp of what I believe is going to be a very difficult and serious situation. I can’t conceive of how the balance sheets of the international banks, which they’ve developed themselves through their ability to value their assets at whatever they pleased to value it at, can remain camouflaged. With the contraction now public in world business.

I would expect to see central banks move to further liquidity. I’d expect to see currencies move to further worth-less, rather than worth more. And those that have protected themselves now, I think will benefit from that protection. But I think it’s at a point where it’s almost too late.

James: Yeah. It will benefit and help them get through the valley and be in a much better position when we finally work our way through this problem that we’re facing.

Jim: Exactly.

James: Yeah. Jim, thank you very much. This has been a real pleasure and I appreciate your sharing your thoughts.

Jim: It’s my pleasure to speak with you.

James: Thank you.

The Desired Outcome

The Desired Outcome

Since the dawn of humanity, humanity has craved and dreamed for the advent of a just, verdant, and peaceful social order. A society that is truly thriving and most individuals would have rich, full, creative lives. A society where all men and women are truly EQUAL.  Some people might have more responsibility than others; no one or no group would be able to coerce another person or group using fraud or force!   A society where peace is the norm, crime was non-existent and all people have easy access to healthy food, clean water and non chem-trail laced skies. A society where humans lived in harmony with each other with the earth and all its creatures.   Such a society is hard to describe because such it would be everything that the society of the 21st century earth is NOT! Are we closer to that kind of society today than we were EIGHT THOUSAND years ago – when government, as we know it, was invented? I think not.

The Great Question

For about the past twenty years I have sought the answer to one Great Question: What has to happen for such a desirable world to be manifest? To find an answer to this question I have applied a wide variety of intellectual tools, including:

  • The scientific method,
  • Logic,
  • The operational point of view,
  • Math,
  • Formal systems analysis,
  • Neurolinguistics,
  • Archeology,
  • Organizational Development
  • Characterology,
  • Political science,
  • Economics,
  • Psychology,
  • History,
  • Sociology.

The exciting upshot of this lengthy search is a potentially valid answer to the Great Question. It may not be the only answer – but it is very likely a good answer – certainly, an answer worthy of your serious consideration.

The Big Problem

In order to understand my answer to the Great Question, it is necessary to grasp the nature of the Big Problem – the obstacle that has kept our species from really thriving since we emerged from the forests and caves millennia ago. My analysis reveals that such evils as war, terrorism, hunger, poverty, genocide, race-hatred, widespread addiction, inter-personal violence, and the like, are actually all symptoms of the same phenomenon – namely: Inadequate Socio-cultural Evolution.

Unlike genetic evolution that has thus far been beyond human capability to control, or even influence, socio-cultural evolution is extra-genetic – and therefore susceptible to human choices and decisions. Unlike the tremendous advances of technological evolution (which is also extra-genetic), our socio-cultural evolution hasn’t advanced significantly since feudal times. While the names of our institutions have changed, the basic methods by which they operate, and the principles underlying those methods, haven’t changed at all in at least eight thousand years – and possibly much longer. In a nutshell, our species’ institutions continue to make very unethical decisions on the same basis that they always have in the past.

Of special interest in the field of socio-cultural evolution is our grasp of ethics. The general lack of understanding of the most basic principles of ethics is manifest in almost all our institutions – particularly big businesses, organized religions, and governments. The result is that law-makers routinely enact laws that coerce us into obeying laws that forbid us to act ethically – or what is worse, require us to engage in acts that are unethical. Governments (all of them) are thus reduced to mere power-brokerage cartels that benefit a very small number of individuals at the expense of billions of others. In the analysis that follows I explore the fundamental ethical principles that drive our societal development, the effect our ethics have on our laws, and how our laws serve the hidden purposes that underlie the way our governments and other institutions function. Following this analysis, I propose a Grand Experiment (for which I am asking your support) that could potentially alter the course of extra-genetic human evolution in a most desirable way – and I provide evidence supporting the decision to proceed.

GOVERNMENT: THE BORG ROBOT

Government RobotGOVERNMENT: THE BORG ROBOT

Introduction

Much has been said about the nature of government and how it “should” serve the interests of the “people” or the “public”. Unfortunately, I can think of no government on the planet that fits this description – and in fact I have come to the conclusion that the description itself is a mechanism intended to deceive the public, thereby hiding the true nature of government from those to be governed.

The description below is a parable or metaphor for government as it really is and always has been. Those who give faith more credence than truth will take issue with it; but those who love truth, and who won’t accept comforting falsehoods in the name of faith, will recognize its validity in the real world.

Origin of the B.O.R.G. “Robot”
Many years ago, some eight thousand to be precise – or not so precise – a group of kings and chieftains in Sumer (now southern Iraq), got together and decided they were tired of fighting with each other over local resources. The bloodshed for arable land, water rights, mineral deposits, seaport access, and slaves was just getting to be too much to bear the cost of. So they formed a cartel – a shared power monopoly – choosing to cooperate henceforth instead of continuing to compete. From a business standpoint you’d say their “product” was power over others – their industry, “power brokerage”. This was consistent with their ethic: “Might Makes Right” that was accepted by many in that era.

To accomplish their ends they traded specific segments of their power/authority to others in exchange for services rendered. For instance, they would appoint a Master Tax Collector, upon whom they would bestow the privilege of stealing from other (less powerful) people. In return for this delegated privilege they expected to receive the lion’s share of the taxes thus collected. The Master Tax Collector, in turn, was authorized to hire whatever thugs he wished to go out and do the dirty work of enforcing the tax collection – rewarding them in turn for their efforts. This process of delegating authority is what we today call hierarchy.

Through this invention of the power brokerage cartel “government” was born. And in the years that followed, the bigger businesses and organized religions adopted the very same model for their own development – and for their relationships with one another. Today, Big Business, Organized Religion, and Government (The B.O.R.G.), the institutions that most of us have been duped into believing exist to serve the public, are in fact the central causes of almost all societal problems.

On the Nature of Machines The most general and accurate definition of a machine is “any device, tangible or intangible, that augments or extends one’s intelligence” – where intelligence is defined as “the ability to predict or control events in one’s environment.” In this sense, government may be thought of as a machine designed to forever increase the power and wealth of those who own it. Today that machine incorporates modules and components in all of the world’s important institutions, be they social, financial, religious, corporate, educational, charitable, legal, or military. So it is technically correct to say that government, in this broad sense of the word, has become an evil robot.

Characteristics of the Evil Robot Like any machine, the robot of government can be characterized by its structure, its functions, and the behavioral rules that have been built into it. It is further characterized by its meta-rules – which is to say the rules about the rules. The meta-rules determine how the rules can be changed (or not), who has the authority to change them, and by what means and under what circumstances permitted changes can be made. There also exist meta-meta-rules that determine who may know about the details of the rules, what may be said about them in public, and which ones are intended to be kept secret from the public. The following section provides a concise specification of the more important characteristics of the robot we know as government.

Mission (The Robot’s Prime Directive): To serve the interests of its creators – forever increasing their wealth and power over others, in accordance with the Power Ethic (might makes right).

Awareness: The robot has a high level of awareness, but lacks awareness of its own awareness and has no conscience whatever. The robot’s awareness includes the determinants of its internal states and can evaluate the performance of each of its internal components.

Construction: The robot is highly complex and is comprised of many hierarchically organized components and modules, including perceptors, effectors, and both internal and external communicators. It also has “thinking” components that include memory storage and recall as well as logic and math. In addition, the robot has remote components that are not obviously part of it, yet which are controlled by the robot and/or its makers. Most of its components are people. Most of its modules are organizations comprised of people.

Control: The robot is run by an operating system, the “prime directive” of which is its mission. The operating system permits no component or module thereof to interfere with its mission – nor can the prime directive be altered by means of “parts” replacement. Only a very few elite individuals are able to directly influence the robot’s programming – and they are very careful about who gets invited to join their club.

Parts Replacement: Many, though not all, of the robots components and modules are replaceable. Some can only be replaced by the robot’s makers and their delegates. Some can be replaced by the robot itself. Others can be replaced by the public; but only using the tools and methods built into the robot for this purpose; and only at those times that the robot is programmed to permit such replacement.

Response to “Malfunctioning” Parts: The robot is able to tell if one of its parts, components, or parts is performing in support of the robot’s mission – or not – and, if not, it can repair itself.
If a particular part is not critical to the robot’s mission and is performing poorly or not at all, the robot will simply ignore the part.

If a part is performing in a way that threatens to hinder the robot’s mission, the robot’s first response will be to isolate the part from the rest of the system (without removing it), so the hindrance becomes ineffectual.

If the malfunctioning part continues to hinder the robot in its mission, the robot will remove the part from its system and replace it or have the public replace it.

If the robot sees the part that has been removed as a continuing threat to its mission, it will first attempt to isolate the part from the public, so no one can re-deploy it within the robot’s system.

Failing in this, the robot will take whatever steps are required to nullify the threat – often destroying the part removed without compunction. To this end it has killed millions of human people without the slightest remorse – and it will probably kill millions more. Success of the Robot The robot has been doing its job successfully for some eight thousand years! Although its makers are long gone, their (philosophical) heirs are still with us and the robot still serves their interests extremely well.

Since the robot is not aware of its awareness, it would be incorrect to call it a “person” and it would therefore be incorrect to call it “immoral” any more than it would be correct to call a sword immoral. Unfortunately, many of the robot’s components and modules are people, who choose to act on the robot’s behalf. Their behavior can be properly characterized as immoral.

Immoral or not, it remains to be seen whether the robot is immortal. If so, it can only be destroyed by its own actions – and this is a likely outcome, because the robot is parasitic, feeding on the public at large that is its host – while creating nothing of intrinsic value. Like most parasites, it will probably destroy its host and itself with it, since it cannot exist without those who nurture it.

I have no doubt of the truism that it is evil to nurture parasites. If you agree, then you must decide what you are willing to do to avoid nurturing this particularly destructive parasite. If no one nurtured it, it would disappear – but this is an unlikely outcome, because the lure of power over others is very seductive to those who have been dominated by others all their lives.

Make a decision. Take a stand.   For much more on this subject, read Ethics, Law, and Government.

WHY TAXATION IS SLAVERY

WHY TAXATION IS SLAVERY

By Robert E. Podolsky

I have maintained for some time that taxation is government’s most criminal enterprise and that it is, in fact, a form of slavery.  Yet it continues to baffle me that so many people cannot or will not see the obvious truth in these statements and insist on arguing that taxation is necessary to humanity’s well being and that it is not slavery at all.  “The greatest good for the greatest number” goes the usual utilitarian refrain…which I maintain is one of the greater falsehoods…for the usual reasons.  But since these reasons are so elusive to the greatest number I have decided to explain my reasoning in language that (hopefully) anyone can understand, thus settling this dispute once and for all in the eyes of any reasonable person. While a whole book might easily be devoted to this subject, it is my intention to present here only a brief treatise on the subject in order to make the information as accessible as possible.

I present herein three separate, but not entirely independent, arguments to make my case.  I call them respectively: 1.     The Property Rights Argument, 2.     The Robin Hood Argument, and 3.     The Smart Business Argument.

The Property Rights Argument is the one usually presented by libertarians in the manner of the late Murray Rothbard. Unfortunately, Rothbard presupposed that most people would accept intuitively that people own their own bodies. From this assumption he then reasoned that this implied the existence of property rights and hence absolute ownership of whatever the individual might create or produce.

While the reasoning behind this argument is correct, few people accept it because it is counter-intuitive.  It is counter-intuitive because as children it is obvious to us that our parents own our bodies, rather than we ourselves.  When we go to school our teachers appear to own us.  And when we grow up and become employees it often seems that our employers own us.

We also observe as adults that if we refuse to pay taxes we can involuntarily lose possession of all our assets, thus demonstrating that government has a higher claim than we do to whatever we would like to believe we own.  In the midst of such a society it is hardly surprising that most of us are unconvinced that we have any property rights not mitigated by government decree. So it follows that if indeed we have any property rights worth discussing we will need some other way to discover this fact than simply agreeing with the Rothbard assertion that we own our own bodies.

Fortunately there is another avenue of reasoning that we can call upon for this purpose.  It begins with the definition of an ethical act: An act is ethical if it increases the creativity of anyone, including the person acting, without limiting or diminishing the creativity of anyone. As I have shown elsewhere, this definition is logically equivalent to similar definitions in which the word “creativity” is replaced by “love”, “awareness”, “personal evolution”, or any of a potentially large set of resources that are logical equivalents of creativity.  I have also conclusively shown elsewhere that the utilitarian definition defining an ethical act as one that does more good than harm is invalid, and that because of this that it follows by simple logic that ethical ends cannot ever be attained by unethical means no matter who (or how many) benefits from such an act[1].

Now let’s ask the question, “Might it be ethical to steal someone’s possessions, either by force or by deceit?”  And the answer is a resounding, “NO!”  The scientist depends on her computer.  The poet depends on his word processor.  The artist needs her brushes and paints.  Steal these things from someone and they are rendered less creative.  By definition such an act is unethical…bad…evil.  It follows logically from this that if we have the “right” to be treated ethically then we must have the “right” to own whatever we are able to acquire without stealing from someone else…and that therefore no one has the right, for any reason, to deprive us of the fruit of our bodies’ labor.

By similar reasoning it follows that we do indeed own our own bodies and that any act which abrogates that right of ownership is an act of slavery because it diminishes our self-ownership.  If our physical and financial possessions indeed contribute to our creativity, then it follows that the systematic removal of any such resources from our possession is evil and is a form of enslavement.  Taxation is just such an act.

The Robin Hood Argument is even easier to understand.  We begin the discussion with my asking you the question, “Would it be all right with you if I stole your assets?” And of course your answer is, “No.” Next I ask, “Would it matter to you whether the theft was by force or by fraud?” Again you answer, “No.”

Then I ask, “Would you care what I did with the money?” Again, “No.”

Then I ask, “What if I gave the money away…would that make it okay?” Again, “No.”

“Suppose I gave half the money to a lot of poor people and they liked it and wanted more.  Would that make the theft okay with you?” Still, “No.”

“Suppose all those poor folks elected a bunch of congressmen and I gave the other half of your money to them to spend as they wished.  Would that make the theft okay with you?” Still, “No.”

“Finally, suppose those congressmen got together and wrote a piece of paper saying it was all right for me to steal from you and give away the proceeds; and they called that piece of paper a ‘tax law’.  Would that make the theft okay with you?”

At this point I hope you have the good sense to continue saying, “No. NO. NO!”

Now I put it to you that the above description is exactly the reality that you face in relation to government as we know it today.  The “I” in the example above is the IRS.  It takes away your money by means of coercion, intimidation, and force and gives it to others who claim to legitimize the theft on the basis of majority rule, public benefit, wealth distribution, homeland security, etc., etc., etc.  To the extent that the above description is correct, the government is a thieving parasite and you are its host.  To the extent that you don’t get to keep the fruit of your labor the government owns it, not you; and to that extent you are a slave.

I should say a few words here about how the government steals from you.  It does so in three ways.  First it taxes you directly by means of income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, parking and traffic tickets, court imposed fines, school and utility district assessments, licensing and registration fees, gasoline, alcohol, and tobacco taxes, etc.

Then there are taxes passed on to you indirectly.  Most of these are taxes paid by the businesses which make or import the things you buy.  Every time the government requires a tariff for the importation of foreign goods or raw materials it requires you to pay more and get less.  If your Toyota dealer pays a tariff, then you are paying more for a car than the free market would charge.  If you save yourself the added expense by buying a Ford, then in effect your government insists you settle for an inferior product so that Ford can make a bigger profit.  This amounts to an indirect tax.  Either way value is taken away from you and given to someone else who didn’t earn it.

And finally there are hidden taxes.  The most blatant example of a hidden tax is inflation…the illusion of rising prices. Every time the Federal Reserve prints money for the government to spend, the government gets the full value of each Federal Reserve “dollar” printed.  But shortly after the money is spent by the government it is absorbed by the economy and the value of every dollar in your bank account is diminished. In effect the government thereby steals the buying power of all of your money without your even knowing that you are being taxed[2].

All in all, if one includes direct, indirect, and hidden taxes, the average American gives up about 50% of their gross income to local, state, and federal authorities by way of taxes.  That means that fully half the fruit of your labor is forfeit whether you like it or not. Is it any less odious to be a half time slave than it would be to live as a full time slave?  I think not?  Slavery is slavery.

The Smart Business Argument starts with a fantasy.  Imagine I am a slave owner and you are one of my hard-working slaves whom I use as labor in my agricultural business.  They (and you) plant my fields and harvest my crops, which I sell at a substantial profit.  My business depends on them.  While you may think that slave labor is free to me, the fact is that it is not. Besides the initial purchase of my slaves, I have to maintain them.  I feed, clothe, and house them…albeit cheaply, but it’s not free.  I pay for whatever medical expenses I decide to invest in their health and I pay for their management, which includes the services of bounty hunters who round them up for me when they escape. I also have to pay for the tools and implements that my slaves use and the seeds that they plant.  All in all it’s an expensive operation.

What is more, I am limited in the geographical scope over which I can deploy my slaves, so my business is pretty much limited to the acreage contiguous to my home.  This limits my profits still further.

Not wishing to remain so limited I consult a savvy business adviser and soon create a labor cartel together with a number of my colleagues.  The cartel in turn goes into partnership with the government.  Soon thereafter I round up all my slaves to attend a meeting at which I make the following announcements:

“As of today your life will be different.  Subject to certain rules and conditions, you and all other slaves will hereby be set free.  The purpose of the rules is to reimburse me and my colleagues for the investment that we have made in you.  When that debt has been paid, you will be completely free for all time.

These are the rules:

1. You can live anywhere in the world you wish.  As of today you can live in any housing you can afford.  You pay for your own.

2. You can do any kind of work you want to do. You will work whatever hours you and your employer agree upon.

3. You will attend school through at least the age of 18 in preparation for your work.  You will pay for your schools through taxes.

4. You may own a business if you so desire and are able to acquire the capital needed to start it.

5. You will carry an identification token all your life and through it your income will be tracked. I will know where you are working and for whom.  I will know how much you earn and where you bank.

6. Directly and indirectly you will pay me and my colleagues 50¢ out of every dollar that you earn.  This will apply toward payment of your debt to me.

7. If you need to borrow additional money and can convince a bank that you are a good ‘credit risk’, money will be created for you with the stroke of a computer key. This money costs the bank nothing to create and represents no risk to the bank, but if you fail to repay it with interest the bank will take away your house, your car, or any other assets you have that the bank required as collateral for the loan.

8. When the government needs to spend more money than it has collected in taxes, it will ‘borrow’ it from the Federal Reserve System which is a cartel of the world’s biggest banks. It will not need your permission to do this, but you and your descendants will be responsible for repayment of the loan. It will simply be added to whatever you already owe[3].  Naturally the value (buying power) of all the money (Federal Reserve Notes) in your possession will steadily diminish as the Fed continues this practice, so of course your debt to me and my colleagues will never be repaid in full.

9. In order to maintain your sense of freedom you will participate in general elections at regular intervals.  The majority vote will determine who occupy the positions of elected officialdom. But the rules above will never be changed to your advantage…only to the advantage of the banking and labor cartels that are actually the owners of the whole system (including you).  Accordingly, discussion of these rules will never be part of the general debate at election time.

10. The local, state, and federal governments of the United States will be responsible for enforcement of the rules above in keeping with its partnership in the banking and labor cartels.  The courts will adjudicate any conflicts that arise; but discussion of these rules will be forbidden in court and any reference to them will be deemed ‘frivolous’ by the courts.  In this way the rules become in themselves a form of law more potent and inviolable than the state and federal constitutions and local charters that might otherwise interfere with the working of the rules.”

The rules above are just “smart business” from the viewpoint of the modern slave owner.  Costs are held to a minimum.  Productivity is maximized.  The slaves manage themselves.  There are no rebellions to be concerned with.  And yet the slaves are easy to manipulate and control using modern methods of scholastic indoctrination and media communication.  What a blessing that most of the slaves have no inkling whatever that they are in fact slaves.  This fact alone makes the whole system worth whatever sacrifices the slave owners have made to create it, because there are no organized modes of resistance to the system. Even the organized religions don’t protest the half-time slavery imposed on the public.  What a deal for the owners of the system!

In Conclusion, I ask you not to feel too badly if you didn’t get it before now…if you didn’t realize that you are a slave.  Most of us don’t get it and billions of dollars are spent each year to keep us in the dark about it.  By maintaining the illusion that we are not slaves the system’s owners remain free to continue their perpetuation of the system, with the eventual (though not too distant) goal of taking over the whole world.  If we don’t act promptly and with vigor that goal will be attained…very probably within your lifetime.  As the goal is neared the deceit will become less and less subtle and the limitations on our freedom more and more pronounced.

With the exceptions of 1865 and 1920 (emancipation and suffrage) we have had less freedom every year than the year before.  This series of books [4] points the way to the only viable solution that I can see to the, otherwise inevitable, outcome of global slavery and the concomitant degradation of the social and physical environments of the world…to the detriment of all…including those who will be world’s rulers.  It is a universal characteristic of parasites that, in the end, they destroy their host and with it themselves.

Now let’s look at another atrocity – the attacks of 9/11/2011. [1] See Appendix B of “BORG WARS” by Robert E. Podolsky [2] See The Creature from Jekyll Island, a Second Look at the Federal Reserve System by G.
